When a Cat Doesn’t Eat for Over 24 Hours, It May Be More Than Just “Picky Eating”
Many cat owners believe that cats are naturally picky eaters, and when a cat refuses food, it is easy to assume that they will eventually eat once they feel hungry.
However, from a veterinarian’s perspective, if a cat does not eat for more than 24 hours, it may be a sign of an underlying health problem.
Cats that stop eating for an extended period may develop a condition called fatty liver disease (hepatic lipidosis). This condition can occur when the body starts breaking down fat for energy too quickly, causing fat to accumulate in the liver.
As fat builds up in the liver, it can interfere with normal liver function and may become a serious health issue if not treated properly.
Signs that owners should watch for include:
• Refusing food
• Being quieter than usual
• Lethargy or reduced activity
• Weight loss or weakness
Sometimes the cause may be relatively mild, such as stress, a sudden food change, or dental discomfort. However, it may also indicate other hidden medical conditions.
If your cat has not eaten for more than 24 hours or seems unusually quiet or lethargic, it is best to bring them to the veterinarian for an examination.
Early evaluation can help identify the underlying cause and allow proper treatment to begin as soon as possible.
For cats, not eating for too long can be an important warning sign that should never be ignored.
